How world silver coin melt value works

Silver coinage standards changed dozens of times across the 20th century. A UK shilling dated 1919 is .925 fine; a 1920 one is .500; a 1947 one contains no silver at all. This calculator stores the exact gross weight and fineness for every common variant so you can value mixed accumulations accurately at current silver spot. Canadian silver is on its own page at /ca-silver.

How it works

  1. 1Pick the country grouping you need — coins are organized by issuing nation.
  2. 2Type quantities next to each issue. Pre- and post-debasement variants are listed separately.
  3. 3Sidebar totals roll up by country plus a grand total at the top.
  4. 4Override the silver spot price anytime to model a different number.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ
What is the silver content of a UK pre-1920 shilling?

Pre-1920 British silver (threepence through crown) is .925 sterling. From 1920 to 1946 the standard was reduced to .500 fine. From 1947 onward circulating coinage contains no silver.

Mexican 'Cap and Rays' and post-revolution Peso fineness?

The 1920–1945 Mexican Peso is 16.66 g of .720 fine silver (0.3858 ozt ASW). Earlier 8 Reales were .903 fine, the 1947–1949 Peso fell to .500, and the modern Libertad is 1 troy oz .999 fine silver.

What about the Silver Britannia?

The modern UK Silver Britannia (1997–present) is 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver — a major bullion competitor to the Silver Eagle and Maple Leaf.

Why do older European coins have odd fineness like .835?

Many European countries used Latin Monetary Union or local mint standards. Swiss 5 Francs (1931–1969) are .835 fine, German Mark coins were .900, and so on. This calculator stores the actual fineness for each issue rather than rounding.

Where are the Canadian silver coins?

Canadian silver dimes, quarters, halves, dollars and the Silver Maple Leaf have their own dedicated page at /ca-silver to handle the .925 / .800 / .500 fineness eras and the 1967 transition properly.
