Copper Penny Calculator
Pre-1982 Lincoln cents are 95% copper and 5% zinc — 3.11 g of mostly pure copper for one cent face. At any reasonable copper price they melt for several times face. Calculate your stack four ways below.
How copper penny value works
Each pre-1982 Lincoln cent weighs 3.11 grams and is 95% copper, 5% zinc. That's 2.95 g of copper per coin — about $0.025–0.04 of intrinsic copper at typical spot prices, two to four times the coin's face value. Sorting and holding copper cents is a low-cost way to accumulate copper bullion at the face-value purchase price.
How it works
- 1Set the copper and zinc spot price in dollars per pound (LME/COMEX standard quote).
- 2Pick how you want to count — by quantity, by rolls (50/roll), by total face value, or by total weight.
- 3Sidebar shows melt value, profit vs face, and copper content in pounds.
- 4Override the default copper price to model different scenarios.
Frequently asked questions
FAQWhich pennies are 95% copper?
All Lincoln cents from 1909 through mid-1982 (with the wartime exception of 1943 steel cents). Each pre-82 penny weighs 3.11 g and contains 2.95 g of copper.
How do I tell pre-1982 and post-1982 pennies apart?
Date is the easiest tell — every 1981 or earlier US penny is copper. 1982 is a transition year with both compositions. From 1983 onward all are copper-plated zinc. By weight: copper pennies are 3.11 g, zinc pennies are 2.50 g.
Can I melt copper pennies for the value?
No. 31 CFR §82.1 prohibits melting or treating one-cent and five-cent US coins for their metal content, and prohibits exporting them in bulk to be melted. Most copper-cent stackers simply sort and hold.
How many pennies in a pound?
Approximately 146 pre-1982 copper pennies per avoirdupois pound (453.59 g ÷ 3.11 g/coin). About 181 zinc pennies per pound (453.59 ÷ 2.50).
Why do people sort copper pennies?
When the copper spot price is high enough, the intrinsic copper value of a 1¢ coin exceeds 2¢ — sometimes 3¢ or more. Sorting accumulates an inflation-resistant copper position at face cost.
